Neat Looking Bug

Bug nymph with strange looking spines

Here is another neat looking insect.

I have seen these guys wandering around alone, and I also saw a bunch of the same type huddled together on one leaf. They all seemed to be young of the same age.

They are the larvae of some type of true bug. There are some long projections from the abdomen and the antennae are long and stick out in front of them. The bright red eye seems evil somehow. Why do we feel that way? Like other insects with much camouflage, they move very slowly.

True bugs are one of the major orders of insects. They vary widely in their habits. Some are plant eaters, some eat other insects and some live off of the blood of mammals (the bed bug).

An example of a common true bug is the red and black box elder bug which invades homes in large numbers in the fall. The box elder bug is harmless to humans.
